How solar energy helps Florida businesses and not-for-profit organizations cut costs and gain stability

Electricity costs in Florida have increased by over 60% since 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. For businesses, schools, and not-for-profit groups, this steep rise makes it harder to manage budgets, plan, and continue daily operations without disruption. Tampa Bay Solar offers a reliable solution: solar energy systems that help control costs and bring long-term value.

Why solar makes sense for commercial and not-for-profit organizations

Solar energy is more than just an environmental choice; it’s a smart financial strategy for both commercial and not-for-profit organizations. From stabilizing long-term costs to improving public perception, the benefits are wide-ranging and impactful:

  1. Predictable power costs: With solar, your electricity cost stays the same, so you won’t have to worry about future price increases.
  2. Lower energy bills: Monthly savings can be utilized in other key areas of your operation.
  3. Increase in property value: Properties equipped with solar systems often sell or lease for a higher price.
  4. Positive brand image: Installing solar panels demonstrates that your organization prioritizes sustainability and strategic planning.

Solar for schools, churches, warehouses, and community centers

We design and build solar solutions tailored to the unique needs of commercial and not-for-profit properties across Florida. At Tampa Bay Solar, we’ve completed projects for schools, faith-based organizations, storage facilities, and local businesses, each one customized to meet specific energy goals.

Led by Navy SEAL veteran Steve Rutherford, we take pride in doing everything in-house. We don’t use subcontractors; our in-house team manages everything from design to installation. We understand the importance of reliable energy for Florida’s businesses and not-for-profit organizations, so we design and build solar systems that save money and last for years to come.

Financing options and tax advantages

One of the most significant barriers to installing solar panels is the cost. That’s why our clients take full advantage of available financial options, such as:

  1. Federal tax credit (ITC): Businesses and not-for-profit entities that qualify can receive up to 30% of their solar investment back.
  2. Bonus depreciation: Commercial solar projects can claim depreciation benefits, resulting in a faster return on investment.
  3. State and local incentives: Depending on location, additional savings may be available through utility programs or state-level incentives.

Even for residential customers who do not qualify for tax credits, solar can still deliver long-term savings. Tampa Bay Solar helps homeowners understand the value of solar energy and how it can reduce their power bills.

How the OBBBA impacts solar incentives for businesses & not-for-profits

Tampa Bay Solar is still helping businesses and not-for-profits go solar, but recent changes under the OBBBA have made the rules stricter.

The commercial solar tax credit (Section 48E) is still available, but only if:

  • Construction starts before July 4, 2026
  • The system is running by December 31, 2027
  • The project uses primarily American-made parts (starting at 40% in 2026 and rising to 60% by 2030) and avoids foreign suppliers

This means businesses and nonprofits need to act quickly. Tampa Bay Solar already uses American-made parts, which helps meet these new requirements.

For not-for-profits

Not-for-profit organizations can still receive cash back through the Direct Pay option, even if they don’t pay taxes. To qualify, they must:

  • Start projects before July 2026
  • Complete installation by the end of 2027
  • Use approved materials that meet federal rules

This may be the last major opportunity for not-for-profits to take full advantage of available solar incentives.

Looking ahead

As utility rates continue to rise, it’s time to rethink how we manage energy costs. Whether you’re running a business, leading a not-for-profit, or managing a school or church, solar can bring stability and savings. Tampa Bay Solar is ready to guide you through the entire process, from your initial consultation to the day your solar system is turned on. If your organization is prepared to take control of energy costs, we’re here for you.
